Depending on the lighting, velvet can have a distinct appearance, in natural light it tends to shimmer more, whereas in artificial lighting indoors, it tends to look more subdued. If you stroke velvet with your hand in different directions, the colour may fluctuate, to balance things out, stroke in one direction with an open palm.
